Norway
Norway owes its existence to the railroad. It is one of four South Carolina towns named after Scandinavian countries (the others Denmark, Finland and Sweden).
This was a proclivity of the Grand American Railroad, which laid a rail line there in 1891.
Claiming another historic distinction, Norway has one of two public schools in Orangeburg County listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Willow Consolidated High School.
The other is Springfield High School, in Springfield. Built in 1926, Willow is architecturally significant as an excellent example of a typical small American town school in the first half of the twentieth century, and was added to the Registry in 2001. The school now houses the Norway Museum due largely to the efforts of life-long educator Gwen Binnicker and her late husband William “Bill” Binnicker.
